Terms for Expressing Quantity (number vs amount, quantity, or content)
Updated: Aug 15, 2019
The noun, amount, is used in reference to quantity, but is often applied incorrectly, even by native English speakers. It is often substituted inappropriately for the nouns, number, quantity, or content. Amount is used for volumes or things that must be measured or quantified in other ways, but it should not be applied to objects or things that are countable. For countable objects, use number.
